Tokyo Boxing Event Leaves Two Boxers Dead
On August 2, Shigetoshi Kotari, aged 28, collapsed shortly after his 12-round draw against Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation junior lightweight champion Yamato Hata. Despite emergency brain surgery, Kotari passed away later that day.
Similarly, 28-year-old Hiromasa Urakawa died on Saturday after being knocked out by Yoji Saito at Korakuen Hall on August 2. Urakawa underwent surgery for a subdural hematoma—bleeding within the skull—but was unable to recover.
The WBO expressed their sympathy in a statement released Saturday: “We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and the Japanese boxing community during this incredibly difficult time.”
These deaths mark the third fatal incident in professional boxing this year. Earlier in February, 28-year-old Irish super featherweight John Cooney died from a brain injury following a stoppage in his first defense of the Celtic title.
